Kids Camping Birthday Party Ideas
When my daughter’s 5th birthday was approaching, I wanted to make it truly special. When I asked her what she wanted to do to celebrate, her answer was as simple as it was adorable: “I just want to play outside with my friends!” But I knew this milestone deserved more than just another backyard playdate.
Turning 5 is such a magical age – full of curiosity, imagination, and excitement – and I wanted to create an unforgettable experience for her.
That’s when the idea struck me: a backyard glamping birthday party! It was the perfect mix of adventure and elegance – cozy tents, twinkling fairy lights, and fun-filled activities that would make her and her friends feel like princesses camping under the stars. Plus, hosting it in our backyard meant we could have all the charm of an outdoor adventure with the convenience of being close to home.
Of course, transforming our backyard into a glamping paradise wasn’t without its challenges. From setting up the tents and decorations to planning activities that would keep a group of energetic 5-year-olds entertained, there was a lot to think about. But with a bit of creativity and a whole lot of love, I was determined to give her a birthday she’d cherish forever.

1. Glamping Party Decorations
Decorating the campsite was one of the most exciting (and slightly challenging) parts of planning! Here are a few tips and ideas to help you create a magical glamping vibe that both kids and adults will love.
Setting up for our backyard glamping party was such a fun and creative process. I wanted each area to feel special and purposeful, so I created different “stations” to ensure the girls had a variety of magical spaces to enjoy.
The first station was, of course, the centerpiece of the party – our large family tent. Nearby, we set up a cozy firepit area complete with camping chairs, perfect for roasting marshmallows and sharing stories.

On one side of the tent, we hung an outdoor movie projector and screen, which turned into a magical activity later in the evening.
Around the projector area, I created a cozy lounge zone with Pieces Leaf Shaped Throw Pillow Cushions, which not only added a touch of nature-inspired decor but also provided comfortable seating for the kids.
For extra relaxation, I also included the WEKAPO Inflatable Couch – a lightweight and portable lounger that made the perfect cozy spot for movie-watching under the stars.
To make it even more special, I added Glow in The Dark Blanket Dinosaur Throw Blankets – the dinosaur patterns lit up beautifully as the evening got darker, creating an enchanting and fun vibe that the girls absolutely adored.
Twinkling fairy lights completed the setup, adding a soft, magical ambiance. The girls loved having this cozy spot to relax, chat, and enjoy the movie under the stars.

If you want to recreate this dreamy outdoor setup, consider using solar firefly lights. They sway gently with the wind, mimicking real fireflies, and automatically light up at night, making any outdoor space feel like a magical retreat!
Tip: Opt for decorations that are lightweight, biodegradable, and easy to hang or set up outdoors. String decorations work perfectly, as they can be tied to tree branches or poles (tape often won’t hold up in the outdoors).

For the tables, I kept things simple yet cohesive with the camping theme. If you already have a picnic-style tablecloth at home, feel free to use it, no need to spend extra! But if you’re looking for something that truly ties everything together, I recommend a camping-themed tablecloth with a water-repellent and reusable design. It’s both practical and perfect for outdoor gatherings.
To complement the tablecloth, I used these Let the Adventure Begin” plates and napkins. The pine tree and mountain designs brought a whimsical wilderness touch to the table, perfectly aligning with the camping vibe. Plus, the disposable feature made cleanup effortless.

2. Camping Themed Food
When it comes to camping-themed parties, food is at the heart of the fun. From snacks to the main course and, of course, desserts, here are some creative and practical ideas to make sure your guests – especially the little ones – have an unforgettable experience.
S’mores: The Ultimate Camping Staple
No camping party is complete without s’mores! Set up a s’mores station with all the essentials: graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows. To make it more exciting, try offering different chocolate options like Reese’s or flavored graham crackers for some extra variety.

Want to make things easier (and less messy)? Prepare “walking s’mores” baskets by pre-packing small cups with all the ingredients so kids can grab and enjoy on the go.
For the roasting, don’t forget to provide plenty of marshmallow roasting sticks. Adjustable roasting sticks are especially handy and safe for kids, as they allow you to keep them at a safe distance from the fire. You can find great options like these telescoping marshmallow sticks on Amazon.
Creative Main Courses
When it comes to the main dish, simple and fun is the way to go. For younger kids, pigs in a blanket grilled over the fire are always a crowd-pleaser – easy to make, easy to eat, and a hit with little ones.

If you have older kids or want to make the meal more interactive, let them roast their own hotdogs over the fire. It’s a classic camping activity that keeps them engaged and adds to the outdoor experience.
For a more adventurous option, try foil packet meals. These are not only delicious but also a great way to bring a hearty, homemade touch to the campsite. Combine Cajun sausage, shrimp, potatoes, and corn, double wrap them in foil, and cook over the fire. Once done, toss everything into a bowl for a warm and flavorful meal that fits perfectly with the camping vibe. This dish works especially well for family gatherings or when you’re catering to adults too.
Snacks & Sides with a Twist
Snacks are essential for keeping everyone energized during a camping party, and they’re the perfect opportunity to add a little creativity to your menu!
Start with a trail mix bar – set out cups and a variety of mix-ins like nuts, dried fruits, chocolate chips, and pretzels so guests can create their own custom snack. It’s interactive, fun, and lets everyone choose what they love.
For a healthy and colorful option, serve “forest berries” or crisp apple slices paired with caramel dip – a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for both kids and adults (For easy slicing, try using the SCHVUBENR Apple Slicer to get perfect apple slices in seconds!).

And don’t forget the timeless classic, “Ants on a Log.” Simply spread peanut butter on celery sticks and top with raisins for a traditional version, or swap them for chocolate chips to add a sweet twist. This snack is not only delicious but also ties perfectly into the outdoor theme. It’s easy, playful, and always a hit with kids.
A Birthday Cake with a Camping Flair
Just because you’re hosting a backyard camping party doesn’t mean you have to skip the cake! Instead of a traditional birthday cake, why not give it a fun camping twist?

One easy way to create a camping-themed cake is by transforming a simple store-bought cake. Just cover it with green frosting to resemble grass, then add fun edible decorations to bring the scene to life.
Use wafer cookies or graham crackers to build a small tent, holding them together with pretzel sticks. For the campfire, arrange more pretzel sticks in a teepee shape and place red and orange hard candies in the center to mimic glowing embers. If you want to take it a step further, a small candle can create the illusion of real flames.
Scatter candy rocks or chocolate pebbles to form a winding river or a rustic hiking path. To complete the look, pipe green frosting into little trees around the cake for that true wilderness feel.
This simple but creative approach instantly transforms a basic cake into an outdoor adventure, without requiring any advanced baking skills.
For an even simpler option, using a camping cake topper set can make decorating effortless. It comes with adorable mini tents, campfires, trees, and forest animals all the details you need to turn any plain cake into a whimsical outdoor adventure. Just place them on top, and you’ve got a professionally styled cake with minimal effort!

For an extra fun idea, let the kids decorate their own mini camping cupcakes with edible “trees” (pretzel sticks with green icing), candy rocks, and tiny edible tents. It’s a great way to keep them entertained while adding a personal touch to the party.

4. The Perfect Backyard Camping Party Favors
No backyard camping party is complete without a little something for guests to take home as a memory of their adventure. Party favors aren’t just keepsakes they can also add to the fun throughout the celebration!
For our glamping party, the girls received their favors early in the evening so they could use them during our backyard games and activities. I put together DIY Glamping Kits in Lothee World Map Drawstring Bags, filled with everything they’d need for the night:
- Mini Flashlights – Perfect for late-night giggles and backyard exploring.
- Gummy Bears – A sweet treat that everyone loved snacking on between activities.
- Bug Cookies – Cute, themed treats that fit right in with our camping adventure.
- Glow Stick Bracelets and Necklaces – Adding a magical glow to the party and making the night feel extra special.
- Merit Camping Pins – The girls had a blast collecting these as they completed fun backyard challenges.
For a simpler option, classic party favors like a mini magnifying glass, compass, or adventure whistle also fit perfectly with the camping theme and can inspire kids for future outdoor fun.
By giving out meaningful and practical party favors, we ensured that every guest left with a smile and a special keepsake to remind them of this magical backyard adventure!
