Best Places to Visit in Canada for First-Time Visitors

With all the changes happening this year, outdoor adventures and road trips have become some of the safest and most exciting ways to explore. Whether you’re dreaming about future travels or planning a road trip for this summer, Canada offers endless possibilities to add to your list. Having had the privilege to live in different parts of this beautiful country over the past nine years, we’ve explored from coast to coast and discovered some of the best places to visit in Canada. While it’s impossible to see everything in one trip, I recommend choosing a few highlights at a time to fully enjoy the experience.

Best Things to Do in Canada

Canada is a vast and diverse country, offering endless opportunities for exploration. From vibrant cities to stunning natural landscapes, there’s always something new to discover, and you’ll likely find yourself wanting to return again.

While Canada’s cities are full of life, they never feel overwhelming, thanks to the friendly and welcoming nature of Canadian culture. Known for being one of the safest countries in the world, you can wander at any time of day or night.

After sunset, cities like Toronto and Vancouver light up with energy, as bustling restaurants, lively bars, and scenic waterfronts come alive under the glow of city lights.

1. Banff National Park

It’s no surprise that Banff tops the list of must-visit places in Canada. If you’re only able to visit one location, this should be your top choice. Surrounded by towering mountains and crystal-clear glacial lakes, every direction you turn offers a breathtaking view. Banff is home to countless lakes, peaks, and endless adventures, making it a dream destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Whether you’re hiking, kayaking, or simply taking in the scenery, Banff offers an unforgettable experience at every turn.

2. Cape Breton Island

Cape Breton Island offers a refreshing escape into nature. A unique blend of rich history, stunning landscapes, and charming fishing villages both old and new, this is a place where life slows down, allowing you to soak in every moment. The Cabot Trail is a must-see, winding along the rugged ocean cliffs and offering panoramic views at every turn. Be sure to stop frequently to take in the beauty! The island is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with opportunities for camping, cycling, hiking, and world-class golfing. If you have the chance, spend a night camping at Meat Cove, the northernmost tip of the island, where you can often spot whales or observe local lobstermen hard at work gathering their lobster catches.

3. Newfoundland

The rugged charm of Newfoundland, often referred to as “The Rock,” is truly one-of-a-kind in Canada. Whether you’re taking a cruise or hiking through the majestic Western Brook Pond in Gros Morne National Park, this place will leave you in awe.

Keep an eye out for whales, seabirds, and even icebergs while exploring the scenic towns of Twillingate or Bonavista. For a unique local experience, savor an Iceberg Beer in Quidi Vidi or embrace Newfoundland tradition by getting “screeched in” at one of St. John’s famous downtown pubs.

With endless adventures to offer, Newfoundland promises a trip filled with unforgettable moments. Wondering if you can drive to Newfoundland? Yes, you can! There are daily car ferries departing from Sydney, Nova Scotia, but make sure to book your spot ahead of time.

4. Canmore

Nestled halfway between Calgary and Banff in Alberta, Canmore is an adventurous mountain town that often flies under the radar. Unlike Banff, Canmore is much less touristy, yet it offers equally stunning mountain views and glacial lakes. Whether you’re into mountain biking, hiking, or simply enjoying a good meal, Canmore has plenty to offer. Many travelers tend to bypass Canmore on their way to Banff, but this hidden gem deserves a spot on your Canadian bucket list!

5. Bay of Fundy

Known for having the highest tides on the planet, the Bay of Fundy is truly one of the 7 Wonders of North America. During low tide, you can walk along the ocean floor and marvel at the exposed seabed. As the tide rises, watch in awe as the water surges up to a towering 16 meters. But don’t just watch the tide, experience it! As the tide rushes back in, it fills the rivers that drain at low tide, creating a “tidal bore” that forms temporary rapids. Here, you can hop on a white water rafting tour and ride the waves! It’s an exciting sight as tidal bore adventurers race up and down the chocolate-brown river in motorized zodiacs. Be sure to book a tour for an unforgettable adventure!

6. Halifax

If you haven’t been to Halifax yet, it’s time to add it to your list. This vibrant city truly comes alive in the summer months. Indulge in delicious meals at the city’s many exceptional cafes and restaurants. Take a stroll along the waterfront and watch as elegant sailboats glide in and out of the harbor. Feel the rhythm of live music at one of Halifax’s iconic pubs and let the atmosphere sweep you away. Looking for a bit of adventure? Just a 25-minute drive along the coast takes you to Lawrencetown, where you can catch some waves with a surf lesson from a local expert. All this and more make Halifax an essential stop on any East Coast road trip.

7. Prince Edward Island

Canada’s smallest province is undoubtedly one of its most charming, and there’s no better time to experience its beauty than in the summer. Stroll through the streets of Charlottetown and treat yourself to the city’s delightful cafes, restaurants, microbreweries, and local markets. Take a scenic drive along the coastline and stop to admire the ocean waves crashing against the stunning red cliffs. For some family fun, head to Cavendish Beach, where you can enjoy the summer music festival, amusement parks, mini-golf, and much more. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Prince Edward Island has something for everyone!

8. Jasper

If you’re searching for one of the most breathtaking drives in the world, then the Icefields Parkway and Jasper absolutely belong on your Canadian travel bucket list. The Icefields Parkway stretches from Banff to Jasper, offering three hours of jaw-dropping scenery along winding roads. Once you arrive in Jasper, you’ll be greeted by a charming western town, surrounded by endless opportunities for adventure. From epic hikes to exploring canyons and majestic mountains, Jasper has it all for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

9. Whistler

When it comes to winter destinations in Canada, Whistler stands out as one of the top choices, especially for skiing enthusiasts. Located just a 1.5-hour drive from Vancouver, this renowned ski resort, which hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, offers incredible winter sports and beautiful surroundings. However, Whistler isn’t just a winter destination. In the summer, the area transforms into a hub for hiking and mountain biking, making it an ideal year-round spot for outdoor activities and adventure.

10. Montreal

Montreal was the first city I lived in when I moved to Canada, and it truly left a lasting impression! With its European charm, old cobblestone streets, and fantastic restaurants on every corner, this city offers a unique experience. The nightlife in Montreal is also vibrant and full of energy, making it a must-visit if you’re looking for a lively destination in Canada.

11. Yoho National Park

Located just a short distance from Banff, Yoho National Park in British Columbia is a hidden gem in the Rockies. It’s home to stunning sights, and two places you absolutely must visit are Emerald Lake Lodge and the Natural Bridge. This park offers breathtaking views and serene landscapes, making it a perfect getaway for nature lovers.

12. Georgian Bay

Located just a short drive from Toronto, Georgian Bay is a beautiful extension of Lake Huron, known for its clear blue waters that can easily remind you of the Caribbean, although the water here is certainly cooler. Whether you’re exploring the rugged cliffs of Tobermory or enjoying the calmer waters of the smaller lakes surrounding the bay, this area offers the quintessential Canadian cottage country experience. With its stunning scenery and peaceful atmosphere, Georgian Bay is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to escape the city and immerse themselves in nature near Toronto.

13. Toronto

Toronto is a fun, vibrant, and incredibly international city with so much to offer. Whether you’re catching a sports game, exploring trendy cafes and restaurants, or just taking a stroll around town, there’s always something to do. From the iconic CN Tower to the bustling neighborhoods like Queen Street West, Toronto is full of energy and activities that cater to every interest.

14. Tofino

Nestled on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino is a charming fishing village known for its stunning Pacific Ocean views. Despite the chilly waters, surfing remains a popular activity here, drawing enthusiasts from near and far. Tofino is also a haven for wildlife lovers, offering numerous tours where you can spot bears, whales, and other marine creatures in their natural habitat. The combination of rugged coastal beauty and outdoor adventure makes Tofino a unique and unforgettable destination.

15. Waterton Lakes National Park

Located on the Canadian side of Glacier National Park (one of my favorite U.S. National Parks), Waterton Lakes is a hidden gem just south of Calgary. While it boasts impressive mountains and lakes, much like many other places in the west, what truly makes it unique is its breathtaking wildflowers. Each summer, when they are in full bloom, the park hosts a festival dedicated to celebrating this vibrant display of nature. It’s a wonderful spot for anyone looking to enjoy both the stunning landscapes and the colorful beauty of the wildflowers.

16. Gaspé Peninsula

Looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure? Consider taking a road trip to the stunning Gaspé Peninsula. Named by National Geographic as one of Canada’s “Places of a Lifetime,” the Gaspésie offers breathtaking mountain and seaside views, along with the charm of quaint Quebecois towns. You can explore one of its four national parks, admire the famous Percé Rock, hike to the summit of 1,000-meter peaks, or experience the sights and sounds of the world’s largest accessible northern gannet colony. Adventure is waiting for you in Gaspé!
